World Blood Donor Day

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on 14 June to thank and celebrate blood donors all over the world. This day has been chosen by the World Health Assembly to promote universal access to safe blood through voluntary unpaid blood donation.
In 2007, the theme of World Blood Donor Day will be Safe Blood for Safe Motherhood. An international event will be hosted in Ottawa, Canada by Health Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada, Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec.
Each year, many countries celebrate World Blood Donor Day with local and national events that mark new initiatives and activities for ensuring blood safety as well as year-round blood donor campaigns. The number of countries joining the movement is increasing annually.
World Blood Donor Day is jointly organized by WHO, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Society of Blood Transfusion and the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations.
