United Nations pushes Darfur agreement

KHARTOUM, Sudan (UPI) -- United Nations envoys pushed Sudan leaders to finalize a security plan for Darfur as a British aid agency announced its withdrawal from the war-torn region.

Oxfam said it is withdrawing from Darfur because of concerns for the safety of its workers after an attack on their base in Gereida, the BBC reported Sunday.

Envoys from the U.N. Security Council are to hold talks in Sudan with President Omar al-Bashir on the deployment of nearly 20,000 peacekeepers in Darfur.

Bashir has agreed to a mix of U.N. and African Union troops and diplomats want to finalize details of the deployment to ensure no further delays, BBC News reported.

Violence in Darfur has killed more than 200,000 people and an existing force of 7,000 African Union troops has struggled to contain the conflict. Sudan has been warned it could face U.N. Security Council sanctions if it continues to resist the deployment of peacekeepers.
