The number of people killed after a drag-racing car veered into a crowd of spectators in Selmer, Tenn., has risen to seven, authorities said on Sunday.

The accident on Saturday evening left four adults dead at the scene and injured at least eight others. By Sunday, officials said three more people had died.

A state highway patrol spokesman said officials were still trying to determine exactly what caused the vehicle to careen into the crowd during a parade at the Cars for Kids charity event in Selmer, 130 kilometres east of Memphis.

The crash occurred during what is called a burnout, when a driver spins the vehicle's tires to make them heat up and smoke.

Scott Henley of Selmer witnessed the accident and said the vehicle "started burning off its tires," then began to fishtail and slammed into a light pole before spinning around into the audience.

The identities of the victims and the driver have not been made public.

The AMS Pro Modified Series, which promotes drag races, said in a news release that the driver was a veteran of more than 20 years in drag racing and had to be taken to the emergency room.
