PITTSBURGH — A man whose company owns land at the site where Flight 93 crashed said Thursday he has no intention of removing a cash donation box that has angered victims' families.
The National Park Service covered the box installed by Mike Svonavec, whose firm owns property where a $58 million permanent memorial is planned, with a black plastic trash bag on Wednesday.
Svonavec said he installed the box to appeal for donations to help cover security costs, which have been about $10,000 per month since federal funding ran out earlier this year.
A Park Service representative sent Svonavec a letter notifying him they would be covering the box and asking him to remove it by Friday. The Park Service has a contract with Svonavec to use the land.
"I have no intentions of removing the box from my property," Svonavec said. "My only plans are to try to cooperate with the Park Service with regard to the sale of the property."
Victims' families were angered by the box, saying it was an insult to the 40 passengers and crew members who died when the hijacked United Airlines flight crashed on Sept. 11, 2001.

They also were upset because they said Svonavec had sought $10 million for his 273-acre property in Somerset County. Svonavec has denied that he asked for that amount, saying he was not negotiating with the families but the Park Service.
