Apple completed refreshing its laptops this week, upgrading the MacBook Pro just two weeks after the company boosted the entry-level MacBook line. Neither system had seen an update in more then seven months.
The new MacBook Pro, anticipated to arrive in June for months now, shares the same aluminum skin on the outside as its predecessors but features the most substantial revision to its internals since the line debuted in January 2006.
Blessed with Intel's new Santa Rosa mobile platform—as expected—the MacBook Pro is now offered with Core 2 Duo processors at 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz. While this represents a boost of less than 100MHz over the outgoing model, the Santa Rosa platform features a 20 percent faster frontside bus and a substantially faster NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor. Apple also now specs out all MacBook Pro systems with a generous 2GB of RAM standard.
The 15-inch MacBook Pro is the first Apple system to feature an LED-backlight display. Also anticipated for months, this improvement gives the system a brighter screen and better battery life while reducing weight. The 15-inch MacBook Pro now tips the scales at 5.4 pounds, a fifth of a pound less than the outgoing model.
While not benefiting from an LED-backlight (that will come later this year or in early 2008&), the 17-inch MacBook Pro does gain the option of a higher resolution display. For an extra $100, customers can configure their system with a display sporting a 1920x1200 resolution, or roughly 30 percent more pixels than the stock 1680x1050 display. The higher resolution matches that of Apple's 23-inch Cinema Display HD.
Apple and AT&T revealed the iPhone's launch date in a trio of television advertisements Sunday night. For customers eager to pick up what's bound to be one of 2007's hottest toys, circle June 29 on your calendar and be prepared to wait in line.
