24 die in Peshawar hotel blast

New Delhi: At least 24 people were killed when a bomb exploded at a hotel in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Tuesday.

The blast took place near Masjid Mohabat Khan, in Hotel Marhaba. Several others are seriously injured and the death toll is expected to rise. The blast had completely destroyed the hotel building.

Police suspect that the bomb contained four to five kg of explosives.

Pakistan's Geo TV quoted SSP Investigations Jameelur Rehman as saying that investigations of the incident are underway.

The bodies and injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital where the condition of many of the injured was reported to be critical.

Emergency was announced in local hospitals after the blast, while the police has cordoned off the area and investigations have commenced.

Peshawar has seen a spate of violence in the recent past, in the tribal belts near the border with Afghanistan.

The Pakistan military has been fighting al-Qaeda militants there, for a while now.
